Thunderbird Looks Ready To Takeover Your Mailboxes

By: Tariq Bamadhaj (Senior Editor)

Thunderbird Thunderbird, from the same developers who brought your Firefox, is looking for the same success in the inbox as their brother. Not many have heard about them but with the release of 3 looming, that could very well change. I used to use in the past, but it’s many bugs and lack of features were temporarily plugged with the many add-ons available but that was just a stop-gap measure. Soon my interest waned and I was comfortable using a webmail client for my email needs until I heard about 3 RC2 and my interest was piqued once again!

There are many changes to this new version, some of which Google users such as myself would truly appreciate. Threaded emails are built-in by default and can be activated if you choose. It has it’s version of Archives (called All Mail) and makes setting up your various accounts a breeze. Those who had used previous versions of Thunderbird would know just how much of a pain it can be to just get one email account up and running. Not anymore with Thunderbird 3 it seems.

So enough talking about it, why don’t you go and try it out for yourself. It’s always free like Firefox and if Mozilla can bite into Microsoft’s Internet Explorer market share with that, Thunderbird could just be the application that does it against Outlook.

Thunderbird 3 2 here.

I'm not exactly sure when I started using Thunderbird. I think it was 2003. Not once have I regretted it or been disappointed. It's the only mail app I've installed on any computer since I first tried it – Linux, Windows, and Mac. I love Mozilla.

I'd have to agree with you John. Since I started using Thunderbird a few months ago, I've noticed a huge difference in my email experience. I find that it it works especially well with my google. For me, this is definitely a whole lot better than Outlook. Wouldn't you guys say so? For those who haven't tried it yet, Tariq's been nice enough to include the download link. Let us know what you think!

    Love,

I love Firefox but Thunderbird, not as much. I started using Thunderbird from version 2 early last year and while it's a great email application, it had some quirks with Gmail, which had me going online to manage my email. But Thunderbird 3 looks really promising with how it works with Gmail and I may just start using it again!
