Portability Is Hot!
What can we say? The MyRealityTech team agree that portability is hot. Everyone loves being able to carry around their important data in their pocket, without being weighed down by superfluous mass and circuitry. But usually, packing a large amount of data in a small footprint comes at a premium. Unless our friends at Super Talent Technology have their way.
Headquartered in San Jose, California, Super Talent Technology Corporation designs and manufactures a full range of DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 memory modules and Flash based storage solutions for Enterprise Servers, Workstations, Personal Computers and Consumer Electronics. Apparently never settling for status quo, they have just announced the availability of their new USB 3.0 drive selling fro under $2/GB. What is so special about USB 3.0? Their latest announcement means real data-transfer speeds of 67MB/sec. Why should we care? Well, the USB 2.0 specification we all know has a theoretical maximum data-transfer rate of 480Mbit/sec. or 60MB/sec. In reality, USB 2.0 provides between 13MB/sec. and 34MB/sec., hence the familiar lag we all experience when accessing data from our beloved USB thumb drives. Imagine being able to transfer and access data 2 to 3 times faster without having to pay through the nose. Imagine no more. Check out this video showing the performance in action:
SuperSpeed Has Arrived!
The USB 3.0 specification is also known as USB SuperSpeed, which offers a theoretical data-transfer rate of up to 5Gbit/sec. In reality, data-transfer speeds come in at around 3.2Gbit/sec. or 400MB/sec. Of course, none of this matters when USB 3.0 is not yet available on typical laptop and desktops PCs. That being said, a dual-port USB 3.0 adapter card can be found for about $20.
The fantastic news for us is that, as with all USB 3.0 products, the Super Talent Express Duo drives are backward-compatible to work with USB 2.0 systems. While their speed will also be limited by the older protocol, you can now buy a 16GB USB drive that is ready for the future – without having to pay more for it.
The new Express Duo USB drive comes in 8GB ($14.00) and 16GB ($29.00) capacities. Super Talent Technology is currently shipping sample quantities and will be taking orders in November.
